1/16/2017 5:23 pm – BREAKING NEWS ; I was informed less than an hour ago that the Sportland Complex has decided not to renew our contract for the 2017 season. I am in total shock right now. The reasons given were… foul language (this undoubtedly came from the adult men’s league that was in existence 2 years ago, not last year but 2 years ago!). poor revenue (not Erie Dek Hockey’s, they were unsatisfied with the amount of rent they were taking in). security (this is the biggest reason, and the story goes something like this… over Christmas break I gave my 17 year old scholar athlete son (I make a point of stating this because my son is not an irresponsible kid) the keys for him and his buddies to go play dek hockey at the rink, when they arrived the doors were open throughout the building due to the construction that was taking place. My son and his friends grabbed the nets and goalie gear from the now doorless proshop (the workers removed it while working) propped open the door to the outside to carry out the nets and closed the door, they played for 2 hours, returned the nets, gear and left. My son now stands accused of leaving the building unlocked with millions of dollars in cars on the inside. In 5 years we NEVER left anything unlocked! so does it stand to reason that maybe the construction workers who had the building open in the first place didn’t lock it up at night after their employees left for the night (and they left after all of the children) and so… nearly 3 weeks later I get a call blaming my son? Keep in mind, my son was there one day! The maintenance and construction crews have been there everyday! I hate to say it but I think they are really trying to go in a different direction and this was a way to move us aside. The saddest part of this whole story is that the kids will no longer have a league to play in! This was started for the kids and it’s sad to say that it was ended by adults! I wonder who will be the first to complain about the mischief children are getting in to these days? It was a great run while it lasted, sure wish it didn’t have to end like this. So Sad!
I have an update to the story… Yesterday (Thursday, January 19th) I met some parents at the pro shop to disburse some equipment that they had purchased, when I arrived at 5 pm I went to unlock the door and guess what??? Someone left it unlocked!!! Amazing. We get blamed for it and the kids lose out when really the owners have someone else on their staff to blame.
